I have always been an animal lover much to the disgust of my parents who
preferred to live in a totally animal free home.
I hate to admit it publicly but I think this is the reason I used to 'find' dogs who were not really lost, kidnap them and smuggle them home so in the end I think my parents decided that the lesser of two evils would be to allow me to have a Pony (working on the principle that a pony would not be expected to live in a house)
I was totally horse mad and spent every morning and evening looking after my ponies and at weekends successfully competing at gymkhanas and local agricultural shows.
My first job was in the Civil Service working in an office environment which I hated. :-(
I then worked at the local teaching hospital in Newcastle as a Medical Physics Technician for about 6 years a job I enjoyed immensely ,until my marriage and the subsequent birth of my son and daughter meant moving in an entirely new direction helping my uncle to run his farm.
I was a dab hand with a milking machine and a reasonable tractor driver, but after the episode when a poor dead half plucked turkey came back to life on my knee and ran away I feel that proper farming is best left to others.
I bought my first Cavalier 29 years ago a Pargeter Dusty Answer daughter not a great beauty but the most wonderful introduction to Cavaliers and as a bonus she was a great sheepdog , she always knew milking times and loved to help bring in the cows. As always seems to happen to innocent owners another Cavalier -( Heidi of Mayville ) was purchased and she unfortunately was 'talent spotted ' by Caroline Gatheral and we were coerced to enter her at a show - and sadly we developed the incurable disease- Chronic Dog Show Mania, a tragic often repeated story.
Heidi's descendants were first registered with my Sweetbriar affix and after our move to Mill Farm in 1979 were Maibee's and she is the foundation bitch behind my 4 Cavalier Bitch Champions and the other CC and Res CC winners.
I have owned and bred 20 English King Charles Champions and numerous CC winners in partnership with Joyce Robins and on four occasions we have won Best of Breed at Crufts with our King Charles Spaniels,we also have won CCs at Crufts in each of the four colours and were the first post war kennel in this country to have owned and bred Champions in all 4 colours.
We have had the distinction of winning the Our dogs Top Toy Breeders award three years in succession in -1996.1997and 1998
I am presently the Chairman of the King Charles Spaniel Club and Treasurer of the North East of England Toy dog Society.
I have judged Cavaliers in America, Sweden. Finland, France and Ireland And in 1999 I had the great honour of Judging the 2nd American Kennel Club CKS Speciality Championship Show and in 1996 I also judged the American English Toy Spaniel Club Speciality Championship Show at Long Beach.
I was delighted to be invited to judge King Charles Spaniels at Crufts in 98. I enjoy my dogs especially my pensioners but I love the exciting moment, when a puppy. who one feels has that special something , goes to its first Championship Show and lives up to all expectations.
I live at Mill Farm with my partner Bill Moffat who gives me enormous support and encouragement, we have a varied collection of animals and poultry, they all seen to have the same thing in common, most are old and they all eat a lot (very much like Bill ).
We share many interests , we both enjoy cooking ,seeing our grandchildren and especially love an occasional weekend escape to London ,shopping and spending an evening at a Theatre. (When Tanya lets us out )
